Caterpillar announced the assembly of the 5,000th Cat 793 Mining Truck, which is destined for a mine in Australia. The company reported the milestone production figure far exceeds the manufacture of any other brand of 227-metric-ton (mt)-size-class truck. The truck was first released in 1991 and the most recent model represents its fifth generation. The 793 has a reputation for durability, Cat reported. One of the longest-running 793s was built in 1992 and has accumulated 173,000 operating hours — nearly 20 years — and operates in a U.S. mine, the company reported. Further, more than 100 793F trucks are now operating via Command, the Cat autonomous truck operations system, which is a part of Cat MineStar, the company reported. Most of the autonomous trucks are operating in iron ore mines in Western Australia, though Cat autonomous truck fleets are growing in South America and North America. Cat autonomous trucks have hauled more than 700 million mt since the first trucks started working about four years ago, the company reported.
