Michelin has introduced the XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY™ tire, described as the mining industry’s first energy-efficient tire, aimed at reducing fuel consumption and lowering CO2 emissions. According to the company, the tire features an optimized, more flexible tread and a new energy-saving rubber compound, delivering up to 3.6% better fuel efficiency compared to the Michelin XDR 250 C tire.
This could save about 5,300 gallons of fuel per truck annually, potentially resulting in $1.2 million in savings for a fleet of 50 trucks and a reduction of 2,600 tons of CO2 emissions.
The tire is said to improve rolling resistance, allowing vehicles like rigid dump trucks to operate more efficiently on various terrains by minimizing energy loss. This leads to lower fuel usage and reduced emissions, helping mining operators achieve cost savings and sustainability goals.
Michelin highlights that the XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY™ tire is part of its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, with the product expected to be commercially available in 2025.
