Alimak Elevators Enhance Safety at Central Deborah Gold Mine

The Central Deborah Gold Mine in Bendigo, Australia, a historic site dating back to 1939, has undergone significant safety and access upgrades with the support of Alimak. The site, now a popular tourist attraction, features an Alimak Scando™ 20/32 TD elevator that has safely transported visitors underground since 1986. In 2022, this lift was refurbished with a galvanised cage, new guide rollers, rack, and upgraded electrical systems to meet modern standards while maintaining the authentic underground experience for over 60,000 visitors each year.

Beyond tourism, Alimak has also improved operational safety for the site’s maintenance teams. A new custom-built Alimak SE elevator, installed in a narrow 1.2 x 1.2 metre shaft at 109 metres underground, now provides safe access to groundwater pumps previously reached only by vertical ladders. The installation included 36 custom rock-bolted ties, a suspended steel pit structure, and a permanent Tirak™ winch system certified for man-riding — eliminating ladder climbing and reducing risk for site personnel.

“Our partnership with Alimak is built on trust. It is easy to have trust when Alimak continues to deliver the best products for our complex environments,” said James Reade, Chief Executive Officer, Bendigo Heritage.
