BME has highlighted a range of underground blasting technologies aimed at improving rock fragmentation and reducing overall mining costs. The company emphasises that aligning fragmentation with existing loading, hauling and processing capabilities is critical, as explosives can account for up to 15% of underground mining costs. Its solutions are designed to deliver consistent results that also support downstream efficiencies by reducing equipment wear, scaling and secondary drilling.
The company’s product range includes AXXIS electronic blasting systems, Innovex dual-salt emulsions and mechanised Emulsion Charging Units (ECUs), which together aim to improve safety, reliability and productivity in demanding underground environments. Reduced post-blast fumes, vibration control and enhanced ground stability are among the benefits reported, with additional advantages in handling, transport and environmental performance.
“By helping mines to achieve the desired fragmentation size and distribution, our blasting solutions also reduce operating costs downstream. This is as a result of improved diggability and footwall conditions, as well as reduced wear and tear on loading equipment and the need for secondary drilling and scaling,” said Derick Menezes, Regional Manager: Underground Operations at BME.
