Hägglunds has introduced Hägglunds Thunder, a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous torque motor that offers a fully electric, frequency-controlled drive solution from low to megawatt power levels. The motor delivers high torque across a wide speed range, from standstill up to 300 rpm, and can supply direct drive power up to 4,300 kW. Designed as a complement to Hägglunds’ electrohydraulic drives, Thunder provides an alternative path to the performance, reliability, and flexibility associated with the brand’s gearless solutions.
The PM synchronous design supports applications requiring both torque and variable speed, making it suitable for operations where compact, efficient, and dependable power is critical. Nominal torque reaches 200 kNm, and the motor can sustain short-term overloads of up to 200% for 60 seconds, while maintaining high efficiency across its operating range. Thunder is aimed at industrial users seeking electric direct drive solutions where high rotational speed and variable power are advantageous.
“PM synchronous motors are a well-known technology with untapped potential in heavy-duty industrial applications. Our focus on dependable and versatile direct drive solutions hasn’t changed, nor will it. But with Hägglunds Thunder as a complement to our electrohydraulic portfolio, we can offer a true Hägglunds solution with somewhat different drive characteristics. That provides new answers to specific customer challenges.” said Tor Jensen, Vice President Hägglunds Global Sales.
