Orica Reduces Emissions at Kooragang Island

Orica has eliminated one million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂-e) emissions from its Kooragang Island site through the installation of tertiary abatement technology on three nitric acid plants. The project, which received $13.06 million in co-investment from the NSW Government’s Net Zero Industry and Innovation Program alongside Orica’s $25 million investment financed by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, has been approved to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units.

The company has also implemented the technology at its Yarwun manufacturing plant in Queensland, contributing to a 43% reduction in global emissions from 2019 baseline levels. Other sustainability initiatives at Kooragang Island include a prill tower scrubber that has cut ammonium nitrate particle emissions by 95% and a decade of using recycled water in operations. Orica is further assessing the feasibility of a renewable hydrogen supply chain in Newcastle to support long-term emissions reductions.

“This is another proud and critical milestone in Orica’s decarbonisation journey and ambition to achieve net zero emissions by latest 2050. Sustainability is at the core of our purpose, and this milestone highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting our customers in achieving their sustainability goals and our long-term support of the Hunter region while also supporting government decarbonisation ambitions. It also shows the power of partnership when private business and government work together.” said Germán Morales, Orica Group Executive and President Australia Pacific and Sustainability.
