WPT’s power take-off (PTO) is being used in lithium mining operations to address equipment challenges in highly saline environments. In the Atacama Desert, where lithium-rich brines are extracted and processed, water pumps transferring brine between evaporation pools were experiencing failures due to starter motor strain and corrosion-related damage. The PTO enables operators to decouple the diesel engine from the pump, reducing stress on the starter motor and improving reliability.
By mitigating a critical failure point, the solution helps minimize production delays and lowers maintenance costs. The extreme conditions in lithium mining, including high salinity and prolonged exposure to heat, make equipment durability a priority. WPT says that its PTO technology allows for more controlled engine starts and functional testing, reducing unplanned downtime and improving operational efficiency.
