Vermeer has introduced the Bit Boss™ shoulder screw retention system, designed to enhance bit security in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) applications. The system incorporates three additional shoulder screws into the existing 6-bolt design, increasing resistance to bit shearing in challenging ground conditions. Vermeer says that this feature helps improve bit retention, reducing the risk of downhole failures.
The Bit Boss system is compatible with various Vermeer drilling systems, including the Ultra X3, and has been integrated into several HDD tooling bits and housing options. All 6-bolt Ace™ and Gladiator bits now include the Bit Boss system, along with most premium housings and universal bit adapters. Bit Boss-compatible housings remain compatible with legacy 6-bolt bits, allowing contractors to upgrade at their own pace.
“The Bit Boss shoulder screw retention system represents a major advancement in bit security for horizontal directional drilling. This innovation helps HDD crews to confidently tackle more challenging ground conditions, knowing their tooling is secure and their operations can proceed with minimal interruptions.” said Cody Mecham, Vermeer Cutting Edge product manager.
