De Beers Group’s Venetia mine has recorded 13 million fatality-free shifts, a safety milestone that places it among a select number of mining operations in Southern Africa to reach this level of performance. The company attributes this achievement to sustained efforts by its workforce and leadership in fostering a workplace culture prioritising vigilance, accountability, and zero harm.
A range of initiatives, including real-time hazard monitoring and peer safety observation through the Safe Sentry programme, has contributed to the mine's safety track record. Venetia’s performance was also recognised at the 2024 SAIMM MineSafe Industry Awards, where it received two accolades for its approach to operational safety.
Ntokozo Ngema, Senior General Manager of Venetia mine, said the milestone “reflects not just a milestone, but a culture of care, accountability and continuous improvement,” and added that it brings the operation closer to its belief that “zero harm is possible.”
