JLT Mobile Computers Launches AI Safety Application

JLT Mobile Computers, in collaboration with Linnaeus University in Sweden, has developed Screen Blanking, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven application designed to limit distraction from vehicle-mounted computers. The system automatically blanks the screen when a vehicle is in motion and restores it when stationary. This function is aimed at improving safety in industrial operations while also supporting compliance with regulations in regions where such measures are mandated.

Vehicle-mounted computers are widely used across sectors such as mining, construction, logistics, and warehousing. While essential for operations, active displays can divert attention from driving tasks. By combining motion sensor data with an optimised machine learning model, the application detects movement accurately with minimal impact on computing resources. Pilot trials are underway to assess performance in real-world settings involving forklifts and other industrial vehicles.

“This project showcases how collaboration between academia and industry can lead to practical innovations that directly improve workplace safety,” said Per Holmberg, CEO at JLT Mobile Computers. “By integrating AI into our rugged computing solutions, we’re helping customers protect their most valuable asset—their people—while keeping operations efficient.”
