Cummins Inc. has been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the Centralia Coal Transition Grants Energy Technology Board to support the development and testing of hybrid haul truck systems at the Proving Grounds – Centralia in Washington State. The funding, covering activities through 2027, will support technology development, validation, training, documentation, and customer engagement. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions in the mining sector by capturing energy from braking events and redeploying it to reduce diesel consumption while maintaining truck performance.
The hybrid systems are being developed by Cummins’ subsidiary First Mode, which has operated at the TransAlta Centralia Coal Mine since 2022, transforming the site into a hub for clean energy innovation. Up to five trial units and around 30 limited production units are planned, with a full production release expected in late 2027. Training for mine personnel, development of manuals, and customer demonstrations are also part of the project, supporting safe and effective deployment worldwide.
“Cummins is proud to continue our mission of delivering impactful, sustainable solutions to the mining industry. This grant enables us to accelerate product development and showcase Centralia as a global center for clean technology innovation.” said Molly Puga, general manager of First Mode.
