Solvay has inaugurated a new rare earths production line at its La Rochelle site in France, enabling the company to begin supplying materials for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, and defense. The move supports the goals of the European Critical Raw Materials Act and marks what Solvay describes as a step toward meeting 30% of the continent’s rare earth demand by 2030.
According to the company, the site is now the largest facility outside China capable of separating all rare earth materials. The expansion builds on Solvay’s existing infrastructure and technical expertise, while also contributing to Europe's plans for industrial autonomy and low-emission technologies.
“At Solvay, we call for strong partnerships and collaboration with authorities, suppliers, and customers to create a competitive and robust value chain for rare earths in Europe. Our expertise, supported by the right partners, will drive the growth and success of the rare earths sector.” said Philippe Kehren, Solvay CEO.
