Volvo Penta Develops BESS Subsystems

Stricter emissions regulations and increasing electrification are driving demand for energy storage solutions in construction and mining. Volvo Penta says that its BESS subsystem provides a compact and transportable option for applications where grid capacity is limited or fast charging is required. Designed for integration into microgrids, the system can support equipment operation in quarries, urban restoration sites, and other locations requiring stable power.

The subsystem incorporates battery technology from the Volvo Group, featuring a high C-rate for fast charging and discharging. It includes a Battery Management System (BMS), thermal management, and telematics for real-time monitoring. Volvo Penta notes that the system can integrate with renewable energy sources or other power generation assets to support grid stability and on-site energy needs.

Each BESS subsystem provides DC energy supply, with OEMs handling AC setup, container integration, and overall system configuration. Volvo Penta has completed extensive testing and prototyping with customers and will showcase its production-ready solutions at bauma 2025.
