SSAB has selected AFRY as the main engineering partner for its fossil-free steel mini-mill project in Luleå, Sweden. AFRY will provide basic and detailed engineering services for the project, which is scheduled to take place between 2024 and 2026. The new facility will feature electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and aims to produce 2.5 million tonnes of fossil-free steel annually, marking a significant step in SSAB's efforts to decarbonise steel production.
The project will replace SSAB’s current blast furnace-based production route, helping to reduce Sweden’s carbon emissions by 7%. AFRY’s scope covers multi-disciplinary engineering for the melting and hot rolling complex, which includes secondary metallurgy, thin slab casting, and hot rolling, along with essential infrastructure and auxiliary services. The value of AFRY's order has not been disclosed.
“We are proud to continue our strong partnership with SSAB on this important green transformation project aimed at decarbonising steel production,” said Nicholas Oksanen, EVP and Head of Process Industries at AFRY.
