Siemens Acquires BuntPlanet to Strengthen AI Solutions for Water Utilities

Siemens has announced its acquisition of BuntPlanet, a technology company based in San Sebastian, Spain, known for its AI-driven software solutions for water utilities. BuntPlanet’s core platform, BuntBrain, leverages artificial intelligence, big data and hydraulic simulation to support leak detection, water quality management and asset optimization. The software is used globally to help water utilities address challenges such as water loss and infrastructure maintenance. Siemens has collaborated with BuntPlanet since 2019, licensing its SIWA LeakPlus software for leakage detection.

With this acquisition, BuntPlanet’s offerings and team will be integrated into Siemens’ application portfolio for water utilities, which is part of the Siemens Digital Industries Process Automation Business Unit. The integration is set to enhance Siemens' Xcelerator platform, a digital business ecosystem, providing customers with comprehensive tools for managing water networks. BuntPlanet’s solutions have already demonstrated effectiveness, including detecting leaks as small as 0.25 liters per second when paired with Siemens Measurement Intelligence hardware.

“We are excited to welcome the BuntPlanet team to Siemens and strengthen our software portfolio for the water industry. The digitalization of the water industry is key to tackling current and future challenges of the global water supply. This acquisition will enable us to provide our customers with a more integrated and comprehensive solution for managing their water networks.” said Axel Lorenz, CEO of Process Automation at Siemens.
