Navachab Gold Mine in Namibia has upgraded its ore processing capability by installing STEINERT’s KSS EVO 6.0 multi-sensor sorters. This investment aims to enhance gold recovery from very low-grade ore through innovative dry sorting technology, which operates at significantly reduced costs and with minimal water usage. The modernised sorting system builds on a decade of experience with STEINERT’s previous sorters, which have preconcentrated over 10 million tonnes of stockpiled ore previously deemed uneconomical.
The new sorting technology incorporates advanced data interpretation software that improves accuracy by separating clustered particles for individual analysis, enabling higher throughput without compromising efficiency. Maintenance has also been streamlined, with design improvements facilitating safer and quicker access to key components. The move supports Navachab’s ambition to double processing capacity while maintaining environmentally conscious and cost-effective operations.
Hildbrand Wilhelm, responsible for shaping the mine’s future strategy, highlights the technology’s critical role: “Sorting technology is the cheapest technology of all the technologies that are available in terms of operating costs. Ore bodies are becoming lower in grade, meaning sorting will only gain in importance.”
