Mammoet Sets New Benchmark in BMA Dragline Relocation

Mammoet has completed a record-breaking relocation of a 3,100-tonne Marion 8050 dragline at BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Peak Downs coal mine in Queensland, Australia. The machine was moved 27 kilometres using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) rather than travelling under its own power, reducing the project’s risk profile and mechanical wear. The move was completed in 10 days, rather than the month typically required for such operations.

The relocation, which included a critical rail crossing with a 72-hour shutdown window, involved jacking the dragline 2.5 metres before loading it onto a configuration of 5x28 SPMT lines. Mammoet says this approach eliminated the need for ancillary power equipment and allowed for daily distances of up to 8km. The company added that global fleet resources were mobilised to meet strict project deadlines and Australian customs requirements.

Using the SPMT method also minimised downtime for the mine’s operations, as the dragline was required for coal extraction in southern pits. The company said that this project builds on a similar relocation it carried out for BMA in 2017, but with tighter deadlines and added logistical complexity.
