AFRY Leads Study on Estonian Phosphorite

AFRY is conducting a Preliminary Economic Assessment and Pre-Feasibility Study for the Geological Survey of Estonia’s phosphate ore project in Toolse. The studies cover mining design, beneficiation processes, and the potential production of phosphoric and sulphuric acid, while evaluating environmental and socio-economic impacts. Both surface and underground mining options are being considered.

Estonia’s phosphorite reserves include rare earth elements, which the Geological Survey says could support domestic fertilizer and high-tech industries while reducing reliance on imported raw materials. AFRY’s assignment includes mineral processing test work, cost estimates and infrastructure assessment.

“We are proud to be selected as a partner for this important project that can have a remarkable impact on Estonia’s economy. Drawing on our expertise, we support clients throughout the entire process, ensuring efficient and sustainable solutions. Our approach emphasizes the connection between process technologies and environmental performance to drive responsible development.” said Janne Tikka, Head of Mining & Metals at AFRY.
