AFRY has been appointed to lead the pre-feasibility study for Anglo American’s Sakatti project in northern Finland. The proposed underground mine is planned as a highly automated, low-carbon operation with limited surface impact and is expected to supply critical minerals to support Europe’s transition to cleaner energy. The study will focus on refining technical and economic details to prepare the groundwork for the next stage of development.
The Sakatti project has already completed environmental and Natura assessments, and a mining permit application is under review by the Finnish authority Tukes. Earlier this year, it received strategic project status under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act, reflecting its importance in strengthening the continent’s raw material supply. Anglo American aims to begin mining operations in the early 2030s, with the pre-feasibility phase scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
"We're proud to have been selected to lead the Sakatti pre-feasibility study. This opportunity underlines our expertise in sustainable mining engineering and reinforces our commitment to responsibly supporting Europe’s green transition,” said Nicholas Oksanen, EVP Global Division Industry, AFRY.
