LKAB-ABB Agreement Targets Next-Generation Mining

LKAB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ABB to form a strategic technology partnership aimed at accelerating the mining industry’s transition towards electrification, automation and digitalization. The collaboration will target advances in energy systems, battery-electric vehicle infrastructure, production management and robotics, with the goal of improving safety, sustainability and productivity across mining operations.

The agreement establishes a framework for joint research and development in areas such as smart power distribution, battery management, and new automation solutions, including potential developments in robotized blast charging and hybrid hoisting systems for deeper mining. A steering group composed of representatives from both companies will oversee the initiatives and guide progress.

“We are entering one of the most significant technology shifts in the history of mining. This partnership with ABB will help accelerate our transformation towards a more sustainable, secure and digitalized future,” said Jenny Greberg, VP of Technology, LKAB.
