LKAB Completes Historic Relocation of Kiruna Church

LKAB has completed the relocation of Kiruna Church, a well-known cultural landmark in northern Sweden, as part of the urban transformation of the Arctic mining town of Kiruna. The wooden church, which weighs more than 670 tons and measures 40 meters across, was transported intact over a specially adapted five-kilometer route during a two-day operation in August. The project attracted thousands of spectators and significant attention both in Sweden and internationally.

The church now stands in a new position between the cemetery and the developing city center, having been rotated to preserve its character while creating stronger links to future cultural and community buildings. Its relocation is one of the largest undertaken within a long-term plan to reshape Kiruna, where mining activities have affected the land beneath the old city center.

“I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who has worked on the project and to the people of Kiruna who have shown both patience and commitment. The fact that so many followed this historic move has turned it into a shared experience and a memory for life,” said Stefan Holmblad Johansson, project manager for the church relocation at LKAB.
