LKAB and Hitachi Energy have entered a long-term collaboration to advance LKAB’s transition toward fossil-free iron production. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, focuses on electrification and energy management for LKAB’s planned demonstration plant for sponge iron production in Gällivare. Hitachi Energy will deliver the required technology and equipment for efficient electrical power management, supporting the large-scale use of hydrogen in the production process.
The cooperation aims to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in power transmission as LKAB scales up its hydrogen-based direct reduction process. Drawing on Hitachi Energy’s extensive expertise in electrification and grid connection solutions, the partnership is expected to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and ensuring a stable power supply for future industrial operations.
“This is another important step on the path to enabling our planned transition and expansion. Electrification is absolutely central to our continued competitiveness going forward in a society that achieves our climate goals,” said Jan Moström, President and CEO of LKAB.
