LKAB has inaugurated a new ship loader at the Port of Narvik, Norway, replacing the facility originally commissioned in 1977. This investment forms part of LKAB’s broader programme aimed at modernising and streamlining logistics between the mines, railway, and shipping terminals. The updated loader, designed with enclosed features and modern safety systems, aims to improve efficiency and working conditions while supporting long-term operations in the region.
The Port of Narvik serves as a critical hub for LKAB, with around 22 million tonnes of iron ore products transported annually from Kiruna and Svappavaara via the Iron Ore Line railway. The ice-free, deep-water port handles approximately 300 vessels each year, of which two-thirds carry LKAB products. The ship loader upgrade complements ongoing investments, including automated silos and new storage facilities, all part of a 5 billion SEK programme through 2029.
“Our logistics is a competitive factor. Every improvement in the port strengthens our position in the global market. The new loader is enclosed and equipped with modern safety solutions, which is important not least from a work environment perspective. This secures our ability to deliver quickly, safely, and sustainably.” said Marit Waleniussen, CEO of LKAB Norway.
