The Rosenbauer RTX, Canada’s first fully electric fire truck, is powered by a purpose-built electric driveline from Volvo Penta. Developed using proven Volvo Group technology, the system has been adapted to deliver the robustness required in emergency response, supplying energy not only for vehicle propulsion but also for pumps, tools, and on-board systems. Its compact and modular design has allowed for a reconfigured chassis, creating space efficiencies and more practical layouts for operators.
Electrification is presented as offering several advantages beyond reduced emissions. Quieter operation improves communication at incident scenes, while the removal of exhaust emissions can support cleaner air for crews working in and around the cab. The electric driveline also contributes to improved handling and maneuverability in confined urban settings, alongside ergonomic benefits such as lower step-in heights and easier equipment access.
“We designed this system not just to move the vehicle, but to empower the people inside it. It’s about reducing fatigue, improving safety, and making the job better for firefighters.” said Anna Maria Ullnert, Volvo Penta’s electromobility product manager.
