Hexagon Expands Drill Automation Portfolio

Hexagon’s Mining division has acquired the Drill Assist technology from Phoenix Drill Control, strengthening its portfolio of AI-based drill automation solutions. Drill Assist, developed in Arizona, applies artificial intelligence to optimise drilling in real time. The system aims to improve machine availability, penetration rates, and downhole data quality.

Hexagon says the technology also contributes to operator consistency and improved blast outcomes, while enabling greater productivity from existing equipment. Within Hexagon’s broader material movement offering, Drill Assist is expected to support autonomous drilling and blast planning operations.

“The technology substantially improves drill penetration rate, allowing our customers to get increased value out of the equipment they already own. The technology also provides highly accurate downhole data that can be used to detect hardness variations and fracture zones, allowing mining customers to improve blast and fragmentation, and greatly reduce energy consumption per ton mined.” said Dave Goddard, EVP, Hexagon’s Mining division.
