Hitachi Construction Machinery Supports Predictive Maintenance Research

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) is collaborating with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) on a research project aimed at improving predictive maintenance for mining equipment. Over a two-year period, the company is contributing operational data and technical expertise to support the development of models that forecast the remaining life of critical components on ultra-large excavators and dump trucks.

The research focuses on using sensor data from key components to detect trends in degradation and predict potential failures. The goal is to reduce unscheduled downtime, improve machine availability and reliability, and help mine operators plan maintenance more efficiently.

“Our mining machines have sensors installed on key components, allowing us to gather detailed information on indicators like temperatures and pressures,” said Daan van Berkel, Manager Mining Projects and Sustainable Mining for HCME.
