Hitachi Energy Debuts Hydrogen Generator for Zero-Emissions

Hitachi Energy unveiled its hydrogen-powered generator, HyFlex™, in a live demonstration at Air Products’ Rotterdam site in the Netherlands. The unit, which powered a battery-electric excavator from Hitachi Construction Machinery, is presented as a cleaner alternative to diesel generators, producing electricity, heat, and water without combustion or harmful emissions. The event brought together Air Products, Hitachi Construction Machinery, and Dura Vermeer to highlight cross-industry cooperation in advancing sustainable construction practices.

According to Hitachi Energy, HyFlex can cut diesel consumption by up to 800 tons a year for a 500 kVA generator, translating to around 2,900 tons of CO₂ savings. With its near-silent operation and zero direct emissions, the technology is positioned for use in areas where noise and pollution restrictions apply, as well as in sectors such as construction, mining, ports, and critical off-grid facilities. The demonstration is part of the company’s wider portfolio across the green hydrogen value chain, including both hydrogen-to-power and power-to-hydrogen solutions.

“At Hitachi Energy, we are committed to providing innovative solutions and technologies that inspire the next era of sustainable energy. We recognize that the entire energy ecosystem needs to move in the same direction. We are proud to have showcased HyFlex in the Netherlands, thanks to a unique collaboration with key industry players,” said Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service at Hitachi Energy.
