ABB has been selected by BHP to deliver, install and commission hoisting systems for the Jansen Potash Project in Canada, including the world’s largest production capacity friction hoist. Capable of transporting 75 metric tons at speeds of up to 18.3 meters per second, the hoist is powered by dual 7,700kW motors and supported by six ropes reaching depths of 1 kilometer. These systems are designed to improve productivity and meet rising global demand for potash, a key component in sustainable agriculture and food security.
Each hoist is equipped with ABB Ability™ Safety Plus, the first fully SIL 3 certified safety solution for mine hoists, underscoring the project's focus on operational safety. Two production hoists are being installed, with remaining systems scheduled for commissioning between 2026 and 2027. This milestone builds on ABB’s collaboration with BHP to advance efficiency and safety in mining operations.
“Helping customers enhance productivity and safety with our solutions is key to us. We are happy to continue our work with BHP on increasing the efficiency and productivity of the Jansen mine while continuously helping to improve the safety of people and operations. ABB’s mine hoists are some of the safest in the world, adhering to the highest regulations, and we are pleased to combine this with enhanced capacity loading as the industry continues to look for solutions that maximize productivity in order to meet demand.” said Björn Jonsson, Global Business Line Manager for Hoisting at ABB Process Industries.
