ABB says it has become the first supplier in the mining industry to publish an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a Gearless Mill Drive (GMD) ring motor. Compiled from a full life cycle assessment that spans raw material sourcing, manufacture, operation and end of life, the document is intended to give mine operators transparent data on the motor’s environmental footprint and will remain valid for five years.
The assessment covered a 24 MW SAG mill ring motor built in Bilbao, Spain, and assumed a 25 year service life. ABB added that external verification to ISO 14025 and ISO 14040/14044 standards underpins the EPD, which aligns with its wider “Real Progress” sustainability programme and earlier white paper work on gearless technology.
“Sustainability is at the core of our purpose at ABB, influencing how we operate and innovate for customers. By earning the Environmental Product Declaration for our ring motor, we emphasise our environmental stewardship and industry leadership for this technology.” said Andrea Quinta, Sustainability Specialist at ABB.
