ABB has been chosen by Bluestone Mines Tasmania Joint Venture (BMTJV) to deliver a major modernization of the main production hoist at the Renison Tin Mine, Australia’s largest tin operation. The upgrade will replace a system installed in the 1990s, introducing a more compact layout and new control room while integrating ABB’s Safety Plus hoist control platform. The project is designed to improve operational reliability, safety and efficiency while extending the life of the mine’s hoist infrastructure.
The upgrade includes a new DC converter, brake stands, hydraulic power system and shaft communication system, supported by engineering and commissioning services. ABB says the digitally integrated solution will reduce downtime, improve machine maintenance and enhance energy efficiency, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional haulage methods. Commissioning is scheduled for 2026.
“This investment supports the long-term future of the Renison operation. Working alongside ABB, we’re upgrading a critical part of our infrastructure in a way that ensures safety, improves system availability and prepares us for the next decade of production of important minerals.” said Mark Recklies, BMTJV Chief Operating Officer.
