RCT – Powered by Epiroc has further advanced Fortescue’s automation capabilities at its Solomon iron ore operations in Western Australia. The company has delivered additional Non Line of Sight (NLOS) machines to the site, including five excavators equipped with its AutoNav Tele teleremote control solution. The system enables operators to manage equipment from an on-site automation centre, with real-time data and visuals provided through cameras, sensors and a graphical interface.
Developed by RCT’s Perth Solutions Team, the technology is designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime. At Solomon, the automated machines are used for ancillary tasks such as rock breaking and tray cleaning, allowing operators to control multiple units remotely and minimise idle time associated with shift changes and equipment transfers. Training has also been provided to ensure local staff can maintain and operate the systems independently.
“It allows them to comfortably control machines in real time with the help of strategically placed cameras and sensors,” said Steven Appleton, RCT’s Solutions & Customer Service Manager for Perth.
