Tenova HYL has reported the successful start-up of its ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer Direct Reduction Micro-Module at Empresa Siderúrgica del Mutún in Santa Cruz, marking the first production of Direct Reduced Iron in Bolivia. The plant, supplied under contract with Sinosteel Equipment and Engineering, is designed to produce 250,000 tonnes of DRI per year. It uses the ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer process, a technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, to supply the steelworks with high-quality DRI featuring metallisation levels of around 94% and an adjustable carbon content. The project forms part of a wider steel complex that includes concentration, pelletising, steelmaking, rolling, and power facilities.
The installation is intended to contribute to the region’s developing green steel sector and is expected to meet a significant share of Bolivia’s domestic steel requirements. The company says that the project strengthens its long-running collaboration with Sinosteel and further consolidates its presence in the global DRI technology market.
“We are proud to be part of this strategic project together with EMS and Sinosteel and drive the sustainable industrial development of Bolivia. Our team showed commitment to technical excellence, which has made this achievement possible. Thanks to our innovative DRI technology, we are helping shape the future of the region’s green steel industry.” said Stefano Maggiolino, President & CEO of Tenova HYL.
