Multotec Applies Scientific Design and Scanning in Mill Liner Supply

Multotec has supplied rubber mill and scrubber liners to mining operations globally, including sites in the USA, Africa, and beyond. These liners are developed using computer simulations and Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling to optimise charge trajectories and wear patterns, supporting improved performance and durability. Applications span mills, chutes, and plants in multiple commodity sectors, including gold, copper, coal, and platinum group metals.

The company incorporates 3D laser scanning to assess wear, inform liner design, and plan maintenance. In a recent installation in Alaska, 3D scans submitted by the client allowed Multotec to design and supply liners remotely, supporting a faster turnaround and precise fit. Alongside tools such as MillTraj and Rocky DEM, Multotec also uses plant audits and ongoing condition monitoring to evaluate entire milling circuits and help customers identify operational efficiencies.

“In this case, the client supplied us with 3D scans of the mills, allowing us to design the liners remotely, creating shorter turnaround times and greater accuracy. The liners were then designed, manufactured, and fitted perfectly in the mill.” said Ralph Hollenstein, Senior Mechanical Engineer at Multotec.
