Liebherr Highlights T 264 Battery Electric Truck Technologies

Liebherr’s T 264 Battery Electric mining truck replaces the conventional internal combustion engine with a 3.2 MW battery developed by Fortescue Zero, formerly Williams Advanced Engineering. The battery system is designed to operate without fossil fuels and is undergoing full-scale validation at Liebherr’s drivetrain facility in Biberach, Germany, where a new test bench simulates varied haul profiles for different mine sites.

The truck incorporates several supporting technologies, including Fortescue’s 6 MW static robotic charger and Liebherr’s Power Rail dynamic charging system. Power Rail allows for lateral connection to power lines, enabling charging while in motion and potentially improving uphill travel speeds. The vehicle is also equipped with an Autonomous Haulage Solution jointly developed by Liebherr and Fortescue, which includes real-time energy monitoring and optimised routing for increased operational efficiency.

Liebherr states that the T 264 Battery Electric is a key step in its broader collaboration with Fortescue to develop a zero-emission mining ecosystem. The truck and its integrated systems are intended to support both environmental targets and productivity goals across a range of mining operations.
