The Liebherr R 992 crawler excavator has been deployed in a solid rock quarry operated by L. Walter & Sons Excavating in Ontario, Canada. Designed for heavy extraction in challenging conditions, the machine combines power, precision, and energy efficiency. Configured with a 7.2 metre boom, 2.90 metre stick, and a 6.2 m³ bucket featuring wear-resistant teeth, it can efficiently load 40-tonne articulated dump trucks in just three passes. Additional features, including the Bucket Fill Assist system, protective plating, and a reinforced operator cab with cameras, are intended to enhance productivity and operator safety in demanding quarrying operations.
Part of Liebherr’s 70 to 100 tonne crawler excavator range, the R 992 incorporates technologies aimed at reducing fuel consumption while maintaining performance. On-board systems allow operators to adjust machine behaviour to suit work conditions, supporting fast, precise, and flexible operation. The machine’s breakout force, stability, and ergonomic design contribute to reduced cycle times and more efficient workflows, addressing both production and environmental considerations. L. Walter & Sons has operated in the sector since 1965 and currently maintains a fleet of 60 Liebherr machines, reflecting a long-term preference for the brand.
“What won us over was the combination of power, speed, reliability and production quality. The R 992 checks all these boxes: it offers impressive power, very short cycle times and a perfect finished design,” said company vice-president Matt Walter.
