Codelco is set to trial the Cat® Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) system at its Radomiro Tomic Division with three diesel-electric extraction trucks. The system transfers electrical power directly to moving trucks via electrified rails, aiming to lower fuel use, cut emissions and extend equipment life. Early estimates suggest the trial could reduce emissions by 60–70%. The initiative is part of Codelco’s broader drive towards decarbonisation and electrification of mining operations.
The pilot is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026 and will run for around a year in open-pit operations using Cat® 798 AC trucks. Finning S.A. will support with installation and maintenance. The project forms part of ongoing cooperation between Codelco, Caterpillar and Finning to advance sustainable mining solutions.
“This pilot programme is the result of an extensive collaboration between Codelco, Finning S.A. and Caterpillar, and will allow Caterpillar to continue to refine and improve the design and functionality of our Cat DET system, incorporating the voice of the customer,” said Marc Cameron, senior vice president, Caterpillar.
