Epiroc has achieved a major milestone in mining automation with the full conversion of 78 haul trucks to autonomous operation at Hancock Iron Ore’s Roy Hill mine in Western Australia. Using its LinkOA system, Epiroc has transitioned the fleet from manual to driverless operation, marking significant progress toward establishing what is described as the world’s largest fully agnostic autonomous mine. The LinkOA platform enables interoperability between different truck manufacturers, providing a scalable solution for mixed fleets and integrated site operations.
The project reflects close collaboration between Epiroc and Hancock Iron Ore to enhance productivity, safety and efficiency in large-scale surface mining. Currently, 60 of the converted trucks are running autonomously, with the remainder to be integrated by the end of 2025. The system manages real-time communication between vehicles and a remote operations centre in Perth, more than 1,000 kilometres away, supporting continuous monitoring and control.
“Hancock Iron Ore is at the absolute forefront of mining automation, and we are happy to play a key role in their success. It’s very exciting to see the major progress done on this ground-breaking project, which represents a major step forward for autonomous mining globally.” said Helena Hedblom, Epiroc’s President and CEO.
