Sandvik Mining will deliver a fleet of 17 loaders and two trucks to support the underground ramp-up at the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia. The order includes multiple units of the company’s Toro® LH410, LH515i, LH517i loaders, and TH551i trucks, with deliveries scheduled between October 2025 and November 2026. This supply aims to reinforce the mine’s transition into one of the world’s largest copper producers.
Oyu Tolgoi, a partnership between Rio Tinto and the Government of Mongolia, is progressing toward full-scale underground production, targeting an average of 500,000 tonnes of copper annually from 2028 to 2036. While Sandvik battery-electric vehicle trials are ongoing, the mine is currently investing in conventional load and haul equipment to meet immediate production goals. Sandvik remains the sole supplier of underground trucks and loaders at the site, with a current fleet of 58 units already in operation.
“The underground development of Oyu Tolgoi plays a vital role in global copper supply towards greater decarbonization and electrification. Though continued positive results with our ongoing trials of Sandvik battery-electric vehicles are taking place, until we are operationally ready and have the required infrastructure to support a BEV fleet, the need to invest in proven, conventional underground load and haul technology is required for the ramp up.” said Steffan Herselman, General Manager Underground Operations at Oyu Tolgoi.
