South32 has awarded Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions an order for 22 battery-electric vehicles as part of a 42-unit underground fleet for its Hermosa critical minerals project in southern Arizona. The order, booked in Q2 2025, represents Sandvik’s largest battery-electric vehicle (BEV) fleet to date and includes development drills, loaders, trucks and bolters. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2026 and continue through 2030.
Located in the Patagonia Mountains, Hermosa is positioned to become a significant source of manganese and zinc—two minerals designated as critical for the US energy transition. South32 is planning the site as a long-life, underground operation with low-carbon design features, including dry-stack tailings and reduced water usage. The company states that it intends Hermosa to serve as its first 'next generation mine.'
“We’re proud that Sandvik BEVs will help contribute to an increased supply of critical minerals, supporting the continued electrification of society and global green transition. Lower fuel expenses and maintenance costs coupled with longer equipment lifespan will enable a more efficient, economical and sustainable mining operation at Hermosa.” said Mats Eriksson, President of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.
